First blog ever, so please bear with me 🙂
As I am sure lots of you know, the team at Lighthouse is constantly reading and learning. And even as the front desk agent I am no exception. Dr. Jenkins suggested a great book to me and I cannot wait to share the contents with you BUT that will have to wait until next time.
Because I have something super exciting to share with all of you….
My husband, Shae, and I are having a baby! And I couldn’t be more excited 🙂 Look how cute it is already!!
Everyone we know is super excited for us. However, some of our friends were shocked to learn that I am still regularly getting chiropractic adjustments.
Going Overboard
As a first time mom, let me tell you: I may have gone a little bit overboard researching what was safe for me and the baby; Shae may have suggested that I was being mildly paranoid 😛 Regardless, I still chose to cut items out of my diet and lifestyle. But, cutting back on chiropractic adjustments was not the route for me. In fact, quite the opposite. I am getting adjusted more frequently than I was before.
Don’t get me wrong, I still did a lot of reading on chiropractic and pregnancy. And for myself it was just logical.

Low back pain
It is no secret that pregnant women experience low back pain. It is also no secret that chiropractic adjustments can help with low back pain. It’s a match made in heaven 😉
Hip pain
In addition to the strain on the low back, my hips were starting to bother me. As you can see in the posture analysis, my hips, even at only 2 months into the pregnancy, had started to shift forward to compensate for my changing centre of gravity. This one isn’t as obvious, but chiropractic adjustments can help to keep your pelvis level which greatly helps to reduce the pain. Click HERE for more info.
Headaches and Sleep Habits
I have ALWAYS been a stomach sleeper. But with my growing tummy I could no longer sleep in my preferred position, throw in the need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and suddenly I was not sleeping very well or nearly long enough. As a consequence, I was getting a lot of headaches. My solution: you guessed it! YAY! for my chiropractor.
Reasons that have not yet affected me 😉
Research shows that receiving regular chiropractic care throughout the pregnancy can reduce the incidence of the baby being in the wrong position when it comes time to be born. This is turn reduces the need for intervention such as a cesarean section, which is something that I would like to avoid. Click HERE for more info.
Also shown in the research are reduced labour times and need for medication in those women who received chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy. The choice of whether or not to have an epidural is very personal and I do not have an opinion one way or another. I honestly haven’t made that choice yet, though I do lean towards having this baby as naturally as possible.
The Super-Hero of My Pregnancy
So, given all of the above and more, my chiropractor is an integral part of my prenatal health care team and will be integral in postnatal care as well (but that is a blog for another time).
All of this of course is just my opinion and I apologize for the length of this blog, but I highly recommend looking into chiropractic for yourself if you are expecting. A good chiropractor will talk with you and answer all of your questions before you are admitted into his/her care.
If you have any questions about the information above, please leave us a comment or call our office and one of our doctors will be glad to help out.
